I volunteered at Balance Beings for fall 2012, which was a great experience. Children are so much fun to work with because they are enthusiastic and love to participate. They seem to enjoy every lesson, so they enjoy learning about nutrition. This was a new experience because I haven't worked with children yet, I learned a lot of new things. I learned that I enjoy working with children and with every lesson, I learned to be more patient, assertive, enthusiastic and friendly. This picture was taken when we taught the students about MyPlate and the different food groups.

The Garden Committee was a place where I could relieve stress on campus during my class breaks. I enjoyed working with other students and learning about gardening. This picture was when we finished cleaning the boxes where we pulled out all weeds and rotated the soil. I learned to appreciate gardening and how important community gardens are.

I helped RD Ning set up her EatRight.org workshop for parents and their children. These families are from the Food Bank Program whose children attend an elementary school in San Francisco. This workshop was translated in three different languages, English, Mandarin and Spanish. RD Ning demonstrated a food presentation on how to make healthy snacks and meals such as a salad, spring rolls, veggie kabob, parfaits and more. She gave books to the family filled with diverse and simple recipes. The book included safe food lessons, management and cooking tips. We had a raffle at the end, where parents received gift cards and the parents were able to take food home. This was a great experience for me because I was able to work with an RD and see her teach a diverse community. I helped prep the food and assisted with the food demonstrations, and handed out sign-in sheets and post-assessments to the parents.
CEASE Program Aug. 2011 to Dec. 2011

Creating Empowerment through Alcohol and Substance Abuse Education was a great program for me to be involved in. I was able to work with SFSU students. I volunteered at many events such as World AIDS Day, Queer Yo Mind, Alcohol Awareness Week and more. Our group created our own teaching tool for tabling, which was SFSU Feud. We tabled events, where we would pass out flyers about drug safety and awareness and played games with the students n campus. For example, we tabled for Alcohol Awareness Week, where we played water pong with students to teach them about drug awareness. This was an overall fun experience for me to learn about real communities that face adversity.
Vista Room Jan. 2012 to Jun. 2011

I worked in the Vista Room for a semester and it was an awarding experience. It was my first time working within a food service environment. I learned to prep food and work on different stations, where I work with other classmates, the chief, and the other managers. I enjoyed working on the dessert line, for example making crust trays for the fruit tarts and then decorating it with fruit. I also step out of my comfort zone, where I had to be a production manager and expedite the entrees going out of the kitchen. This experience showed me how I like to work under pressure.
SF Food Bank Aug. 2010 to Dec. 2010

I learned to appreciate community work by volunteering in food production on the line at the SF Food Bank. It was a tiring job because you had to do the same repetitive movement. I did various task such as weighing rice or pasta, sealing packages, hunching over to look for good apples and evening taping up boxes. All of the workers rely on one another so we can keep the assembly going at a good pace. The food bank needs as much help as possible. They rely on volunteers, so communities can receive their shipments of food. It always felt good after a shift because I know someone out there received the food I packaged. I also was able to gain food production skills such as practicing sanitation rules, measuring and working on a food line with other people.
Laguna Honda Hospital Jan. 2010 to Jun. 2010

I worked at the Nursing Administration Office at Laguna Honda Hospital. I did clerical work such as answering phone calls, transferring phone calls, faxing, making copies, filing, creating binders, passing out paychecks to nurses, inputting data and more. This was a busy office because it only had 2 administrators for a large nursing staff for each shift. I had fun working with the staff because they were so caring and sweet. This was a great experience for me to learn how it feels to work in an office department and become familiar with clerical work.
